Flush pointing is typically done in a lime based mortar, however can still be done in a cement based mortar. Flush pointing finished flush with the brickwork and has exposed aggregate in the finish.
Bucket handle pointing is a concave jointing produced with a jointing iron. this typically a sand and cement mortar on properties after the 1950s.
Weather struck pointing is pointing done at an angle to direct water away from the building. can be done in lime or cement mortar. most older properties have been repointed in cement weather struck which should be replaced with lime.
Tuck pointing is rarely used but is done by dying the mortar between the bricks to match them and adding a thin line to make the joints look smaller.

All our repointing mixes include lime, but if the building was originally built in lime we would replace it with a lime based mortar to prevent damp and any future damage.
Yes Repoint is and can be a very messy job depending on the condition of the original mortar, However we try to reduce the mess and dust by using dust extraction and sheets where possible.
